With her trademark wit and razor-sharp sensibilities, Echo Heron, the critical care nurse whose New York Times bestseller, Intensive Care, gives readers an intimate view into the emotional and often shocking world behind the closed doors of a hospital, now returns to Redwoods Memorial Hospital.
Set amid the chaos of code blues and hospital politics, Condition Critical is the continuing story of a nurse the intimate stranger who is sister, mother, confessor and healer to all her patients.
As bootleg copies of Intensive Care send shock waves through the staff lounges, Echo Heron tackles the daily disorder of caring for patients in a large city hospital. She walks that perpetual tightrope of stress, bureaucratic idiocy, and everyday disasters caused by understaffing, and pressure from the hospital administration.
She fleshes out patient vignettes in ways that stay in one’s memory. She will make readers laugh and cry with this often shocking look a life in the trenches The infamous “haunted” room 5/6. Nights in ER spent tending stabbing and shooting traumas, freak accidents and child abuse. Then there are the patients themselves the schizophrenic convict who must recover in time for his execution, the house painter with a broken neck who defies all odds to walk again, a fellow nurse who is brutally beaten in his own apartment, an elderly Asian woman trying to bind herself into invisibility.
In Condition Critical, Echo Heron shines a probing light on the myriad roles of the nurse those extraordinary humans who are rich in the gifts of healing and the wisdom which flows through the heart—compassion.

CONDITION CRITICAL The Story of a Nurse Continues eBook Echo Heron

If you are a nurse, or want to be a nurse, you need to read Condition Critical. Although it is set a few years ago, nothing much has changed in the nursing world when it comes to staffing levels and workloads. Much of Echo's work still rings true. I have been a fan of this author since her book was first published. All of her nonfiction works hit at the heart of nursing. They really are a must read for all nurses, retired nurses, or those interested in entering the field of nursing. Echo Heron is a grade a writer all around. Once I start her box I can't put them down . And I reread them quite frequently.

CONDITION CRITICAL The Story of a Nurse Continues eBook Echo Heron Reviews

It was a great book about her life but it was sad how it ended. I wished for something how intensive care ended.
Echo Heron seems to have a sense of what will amuse or touch her readers. Perhaps this ability is an outgrowth of her nurse's empathy. I have found the narrations of various medical cases alternately humorous and moving. For me, Condition Critical is the most compelling of her books.
An amazing read. Echo Heron really speaks to the heart of nursing. I am totally gobsmacked, as a critical care nurse, the enormous patient load in the critical care and step down units she worked in. Unsafe and overburdened, I can only be thankful that we haven't reached that same place. I fear it is coming. Our nurse to patient ratio is still doable. I'm in awe of these nurses working in those conditions. But RN's are starting to be replaced with RPN 's in the critical care units. I fear more patients will die without the expertise of our degree prepared RN's.
I give this one 4 stars because Echo finally figured out how to make her personal life readable. I gave her first book (Intensive Care) 2 stars because I found her writing about her personal life was very annoying. This book, on the other hand, is a good read from start to finish.
This book was quite an eye opener. Echo's stories of her patients, the nurses and life in a hospital were fascinating. My only regret is that I didn't read her first book before this one. I do plan on reading it. The book was well written, and Echo writes with a great sense of humor. I would definitely recommend this book.
This book took me by surprise. It's not what I expected, but far better. Big eye opener into the life of one nurse. It was funny and serious and maddening and sad.
Ms. Heron writes wonderfully and accurately, and with an abundance of humor about the world of hospital nursing and hospital politics. If you are a nurse, you will recognize the caring that nurses provide for their patients, most of which goes unrecognized by all but the patient and the nurse, and the unbelievable amount of things a nurse must do. Paperwork, politics and CYA are involved in the daily routine. And it gets worse every day. Kudos to a woman whose works I have read and loved since I was a nursing newbie.
